Education Means Enlightened hearts, Not Straight A’s !

Inside of a classroom with back to school on the chalkboard

Cute little kids with shining eyes and huge heavy school bags on their shoulders…. This is what comes to my mind when I think about schools.

Life is a race. The one who stops, fails. You have to run fast to achieve your goals and this running fast for a school kid means he has to study hard to get good grades. He has to pass four exams and many tests in one year with excellent marks. He has to be brilliant in studies and has to answer his teacher’s questions during lectures. He must shine in studies no matter how shining he is or not in his real life.

On the other hand teachers have to cover a huge syllabus in one year. They have to check home works of hundreds of students everyday and papers four times a year. They have a fixed time for their lecture and they sometimes have to deliver consecutive lectures without any break. They don’t know the names of students in their class. They sometimes do remember the names of some top students and some bottom ones. All they worry about is how excellent is the result of their class at the end of year.

This is our school system. This is our education system about. A number of big school buildings with high fees and charges for admission have been constructed in a past few years. They don’t care about the quality of education, quantity is the only thing that matters. An innocent kid enters school and a cramming youngster passes out after 10 years. No one keeps a record of what he has learnt that would help him in his life? What are the improvements in his personality and attitude ? How strong is his character and how confident are his aims? All that matters is a result card with stars and excellent grades and straight A’s.

The real question isn’t about the problems. It is about the solutions. In my opinion, If people stop using education system as a means of earning money and start thinking honestly about the future of our youngsters, these problems can be solved. And if teachers think more about character building and less about the syllabus and students think more about correcting themselves and less about getting good grades. Obviously this is possible only if there is no pressure on their heads.

Our grand-Ma’s and Grand-Pa’s are more intelligent and have more wisdom then our parents and us. They didn’t even go to schools. Then from where did they learn all this ? We don’t learn wisdom from schools. We learn wisdom by experiencing life and this is possible only if we keep our eyes open. Problems these children have to face in real life can’t be solved by Maths formulas or equations. Nor is their depression lessened by arithmetic and geometry. It requires wisdom and courage which comes only if you have an open mind and enlightened heart.

Napoleon once said, “Give me educated Mothers and I will give you an educated Nation“. He surely don’t meant Mothers with brilliant grades but he meant Mother’s with wisdom and open hearts. That is what education is all about. You may have read about Bill gates story, how he was not a good student and his friend was a brilliant one; and now He is the owner of Microsoft and his friend is his employee. Albert Einstein couldn’t even speak when he was four and his teachers were of the opinion that he wouldn’t make anything of himself. Benjamin Franklin was dropped out of school at age ten. History is full of examples like that.

No doubt studying is important to earn a good living . But more important than that is keeping mind and heart open, pondering upon the nature, experiencing life to enlighten our hearts and most importantly trying, trying again no matter how many times we fail ! We will be educated then, in true means.

  1. I agree with your thoughts here. My kids’ schools spend a lot of time training them to take a standardized test which is supposed to assess what they have memorized…I mean, “learned”. My older son had a couple teachers who spiced things up a little with hands-on lessons and science experiments.

    • Well you are right Jannat ! Things have been made difficult for the kids…. They are asked to memorize a lot of things each year and no one observes what they have actually learnt ! Best of luck for your kids 🙂 And many thanks for your time 🙂 Love you xx

  2. I second that. And I don’t think I could accede more to what you’ve written. Our generation is worried about wealth and riches of this world more than the moral and ethical values, which are supposed to be at the top of their worries. Our educational system is culpable yes, but so are we. Since, we haven’t really done anything regarding the betterment of our people. But, all put aside, it was a fine piece to read and on top of all, truthful and brilliantly explained.

Well..i can certainly relate as even among the highest scoring grads in high school..and three degrees out of college..relatively speaking i still knew nothing..

My real education was in a Military Bowling Center full of real live diverse human beings..trying to cooperate and simply make each other happy in a stress free environment..

So Love was the real education..that is all..

But still though there was no one to truly teach me about stress and the real human limitations that can really lead to death..if left..unchecked…

So i lived and learned is all..and while i have no children..if i did i would certainly educate them on the human that is laughter..movement..and simply the homeostasis of alive..

Yes..there are much more than the focused upon 3 types of intelligence in school..which are verbal..mathematical and visual spatial intelligence..

There is movement..that comes with the eastern philosophies of Yoga..Tai-Chi.. or the Chakras of Indian Gurus and all of that..the fuller energy that is the human of spirit..

And YES THERE ARE THE EXISTENTIAL TRUTHS that only the study of philosophy can bring..

And moreover there is the musicK of Love that allows us TO GO ON..AND TO BE HAPPY AS ONE…

SO YES..OVERALL THE NEW EDUCATION SYSTEM..DOES SIMPLY SXXK..

SO WHAT..CAN WE DO ‘BOUT THAT..

WELL IN THE INFORMATION WORLD..freedom is information..and sharing with others..

So even if there is no formal education that can GET ONE THERE..

    • You are so right Ma’m ! I too hated school for the same reason. Thanks so much for your presence here and for the comment 🙂 Wish you a very happy new year 🙂 Much love xx

  5. Once upon a time — as far as for our part — there was a brilliant enemy named lord Thomas Macaulay who guided us to the path of this “brilliant” existing educational system where we are now producing very “eligible” children.
    so righteously expressed those thoughts!

    • Well we should have forgotten that wise man and his things by now but I guess no one is honest with our youth and kids anymore. Thanks for the comment and appreciation. Naya saal bohat mubarik ho ap ko 🙂 xx

      • Oh, you are right. but another reality about us — one sheep follow another — so till today we are unaware of the kind of honesty with our kids. So, pata nahi ye ‘BhaiR Chaal’ kab tak jaari rahegi?
Another year cuts off — Allah hamari zindagi par rahm farmaye aor asaani ata karay.

  6. Educated men are those who know how to solve problems both with their conduct and knowledge. Uneducated are those who know how to create problems with the same things. With this yardstick, we can decide who is educated or otherwise, each time we meet someone.

          • When no one wishes us, when not a sound is heard, I hear him – the Divine Lover – communicating in silence. Can you hear him too? Wishing you?

I will share a few lines from a book of poetry called Savitri, written by Sri Aurobindo:

In moments when the inner lamps are lit
And the life’s cherished guests are left outside,
Our spirit sits alone and speaks to its gulfs.
            A wider consciousness opens then its doors;

Now this wish is specially for you, okay? You are a mature soul. Smile.

            • Are you an expert on making people smile ? Do you know how sweet and awesome you are ? You just made my new year’s start whole more beautiful….. Rexie !! Love you….Love you so much. Loving these beautiful lines and loving your pure love and care for me. Thanks so much…..Love you !

              • But that was the message from Allah. Go and kiss him as a new year’s gift. I am not going to watch. Lol. (I can’t control my laughter as I write this.)

                  • Btw, Lala I am on FB so if you want to add me there, you can. I am happy to create more noise in your life. Lol. You will find me in Himani’s friends under the name Rekha. Please know that most of my FB happens to reflect my activities on WordPress. You can choose not to FB me if that is too boring.

                    • Oh Sure I will add you gladly ! Just going to stalk Himani for searching you 😉 And I am sure you are not more boring than me 😉

  7. Love this! Just today my 8-year-old son told me with fear on his face that he doesn’t want to go to college. I told him in all honesty that he doesn’t have to. The look of relief on his face was priceless. I agree that wisdom is not a result of going to school.
Thanks for visiting my blog today! I’m looking to reading more of your.

    • Aww that’s cute and sad at the same time. Kids should love going school and this can only happen if their is no pressure on their heads. Hope your son get to love school someday 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting mine too. Hope to see you more often ! It’s a pleasure meeting you. Love xxx

  8. well written, Lala. not necessary to have oodles of degrees but being well read, absorbing what we learn and sharing the goodness of our education with others. great post. ☺

  9. Well said. Education in the west is breeding derelicts. I look to my right and left on most occasions and see people who are killing themselves with a Masters Degree and a double PhD, and yet they lack common decency, respect, and open mindedness to continue to grow. I do think everyone should attain some form of education (and I am biased to social services, only because they make you choose a form of counseling, and then you go through counseling for a year and work out your personal crap so you’re less likely to impose on clients), however I would base this off of the need to learn discipline, structure, explore new ideas, be challenged, and well articulated. My uncle didn’t make it pass grade 3, but today the man builds tramways and cable car transporters for large cities. I think that’s the way to do it- you don’t need “formal” education for everything or to win the race, but just the gumption to be well learned in whatever your dreams may be, like homemaking, culinary arts, electrical engineers, counselors, etc… Thank goodness for the new iTunes U (yes I am a sucker for taking free online courses as many as I can get my hands on).

    • You are so right about everything you just said ! Formal education is never important to prove that you ll be ‘something’ in your future…Instead getting knowledge is important and we can’t get knowledge by having long list of degrees. Your examples are impressive. You know that is the thing I keep telling my parents ho are worried for my younger brother who don’t get good grades but they don’t understand. Hope they understand someday 🙂 Thank you so much for such a lively response to my post. Wish you a very happy new year 🙂 Much Love xx

  10. I truly appreciate your post! As a mother trying to get the best education for her three sons, I find many things very challenging about the way we currently view education.

    • Thank you so much Tammy for your appreciation and presence. You are right, you will find many challenging things about which you an’t do anything. Hoping for the best ! good luck for your kids 🙂 Much love xx
